HLB International, the global advisory and accounting network, recently published a report entitled, “Threat or Opportunity: Assessing the Cyber-Risk Landscape in the Age of Hybrid Work.” The report surveyed 136 IT professionals to identify lessons learned during the switch to remote work during global lockdowns. It also shared insights on how companies can proactively prevent cybercrime.

Key Insights Related to Cybersecurity in the Workplace for 2021

Companies around the world have moved to hybrid work environments, with employees working both in-office and remotely. This has opened the door to increased risk in the form of cyberattacks and data breaches.

Two of the primary types of threats are (1) social engineering and (2) phishing scams. These can occur in the form of both vendor email and business email compromises. The report identifies and details endpoint visibility and a comprehensive endpoint protection plan as key prevention measures.

Also noted is a significant change in cyber risk management strategy between 2020 and 2021. Last year, most respondents were focusing on internal risk assessment, while this year respondents’ top priority is developing an incident-response plan.

As Chief Technology Officers continue to refine remote work policies, HLB recommends focusing on rules for mobile and desktop devices, third-party application downloads, social media use, and email security.
